Values of the Game
Passion
"I couldn't get enough. If I hit ten in a row, I wanted fifteen. If I hit fifteen, I wanted 25. I stayed out on that floor hour after hour, day after day, year after year." - Bill Bradley
Discipline
"If you're not practicing, just remember someone, somewhere, is practicing and when you two meet, given roughly equal ability, he will win." Ed Macauley
Confidence
Larry Bird walked into the locker room at NBA All Star game for the 3-point shootout. "Which one of you guys is shooting for 2nd place?" - That kind of confidence comes from constant practice and total concentration on what you're doing.
Selflessness
Try to work together to produce a championship. "We won" comes to mean much more and lasts longer than "I Scored". Players must realize that what any one player can do alone will never equal what a team can do together.
Respect
Players must understand respect for the game, respect for the adults involved and respect for each other. Many people will tell you that a coach who took an interest in their total well being turned around their lives.
Courage
Courage in sports means giving 100 percent for your team. Shooting involves its own kind of courage. When the game is on the line, a brave player wants the ball
Leadership
Leadership means getting people to think, believe, see, and do what they might not have without you. The leader is not necessarily the best player, but the one who has the greatest respect on the team. The best player can lead by example. A truly excellent player can make the worst player into a good one. "A pass is not a pass when it is made after you've tried everything else" Peter Carrill -
Responsibility
By the time moist players reach the pros, they've shot a basketball a million times. To stay in the pros have to shoot a million more. Scoring 12 points and playing your role on a winning team is better than scoring 20 and losing.
Resilience
Resilience is when you struggle, but still manage to dig deep and find a way to overcome your opponent. It's easier to become Number 1 than it is to stay Number 1.
Imagination
Imagination motivates you and enables you to dream. At one time or another, every kid who has picked up a basketball imagines becoming a superstar. It starts when you are home shooting in the driveway.
*The Values of the Game is a great book written by Bill Bradley. All of the values listed above and all content was taken from the chapters in the book. The CMEK program and its coaches strive hard to maintain and teach these values to our players.
